You can run ubuntu via the 'live' cd until you get comfortable with it and to ensure it is hardware compatible for your system, or you can easily partition your hard drive - ubuntu comes with it's own partitioner. I use 'dapper' because my system works fine with it as it is getting old now and I am not very computer savvey and probably never will be. The great thing about ubuntu is it's people. When I cannot do something, advice/help is widely available.
