Indeed. It is exactly the same as saying "curiosity killed the cat!" The "feeling" or the "common sense" around this statement is "STFU, or you will become unhappy, you will lose your ignorance (meaning bliss) and you will be sorry you did, because everybody knows that ordinary people should not be curious!"

It is not however where the statement comes from, but it serves to clarify my point. Namely: the Conspiracy Theory stares us in the face every day "everyone" knows it's true. "everyone" knows how it works and "everyone" knows the objective of the statement because "everyone" knows that it cannot be proven.

It is very deflating.
