I've tried listening to it, but I've failed to grasp an understanding of the genre so I don't know how to appreciate it. There are a handful of what I guess are considered rap songs that I think are well done and enjoyable, but the vast majority sounds like rubbish to my ears.

When I say I don't understand the genre, don't confuse that with not understanding the message. The message is usually loud and clear. What I mean is, that for me to appreciate a type of art, I have to be able to recognize the creativity and skill involved in creating it. I usually recognize neither in any form when I hear rap or hip hop music.

To a slightly lesser extent, the same goes for country music.
