What about how they got on the planet? Where were they going. Does not have to be a crash landing, perhaps something really banal? Maybe a cargo ship or something, and they have all these rubber ducks on board.

I was thinking of scientific expedition. But the space-ship goes in the wrong direction and instead of going home back to Earth, it travels deeper and deeper in space. The crew decides to stop it because it becomes very dangerous. The only choice is to land on a planet.
