Thumbs down Why post this?? Why are you here??

Now, I'm not trying to put any one down here, I really have to wonder, why start a thread like this: What do you think the best FPS of all time is?

??

I mean, seriously, why the hell do you give a crap about what other people's favourite First Person Shooter is? I don't care what other people's are. I don't even think I care what my own is. Games are games, why pick one? I mean, its not that I don't like fps, I do. I have been playing them as long as I can remember. Its just that, in reality, what does it matter to any one at all what other people classify as 'best'? To start with 'best' usually means 'favourite', which really has nothing to do with quality or any real merit at all, but simply personal preference. Preference often derived from a favourable experience, maybe your first exposure to the genera, or just happened to get it at the right time, or what ever. Maybe it was the only game you had for your only console, and you didn't have any other options, now you have a fondness for it. Its rarely even logical... Yea, some people (developers, maybe?) may pick 'best' based on technical merits or sales or some thing scientific, but the people who play it? I doubt it. People dont play for technical detail, they play for fun....

Further more, any one who likes some thing will defend it (if they are so inclined) with out any real reason. They might even have a legitimate argument. 'Oh it revolutionised the genera'. So what? How does that make it 'best'. Even if there is a real reasons, they don't really need one, its just convenient. A favourite is a favourite, even if it sucks. I think taking a logical standpoint on rating which form of standpoint gets the most merit would be just ironically silly, and would defeat the whole point of entertainment in the first place. Sure, magazines and websites rate games all the time, and even make a 'best games' list, based off of various factors, but these are merely guidelines on basic quality and over all production, not theological notations to be taken as your own personal guidelines. I read reviews and take them into consideration, but in the end, its about what I enjoy, not what a review says.

So, It begs the question, did the creator of this thread just make it to voice his thoughts, to seek out validation that his favorite FPS is indeed the best choice. Perhaps he seeks kinship in others with a similar taste in games. If that were the case, its seems that making a threat labeled "OMG *INSERT FPS* ROXORZ!!!1!!ONE!!!" Would make more sense....

So its not necessarily that I think having a favourite game with out a good reason is bad. In fact, I think that's terrific. Liking some thing just because you enjoy it is what gaming is all about. Its similar to art , in that you just do it because you do it. It like meditation.. or some thing along those lines.

Enough about games!!! That's not the point. The point is that threads like this are made all the time. "Whats the best Blah Blah?". "Who's the best Yackety Smackity?". Things like that. Then follows an often HUGE list of people just listing their favs. Who reads this shit??? Who? Seriously.... I know I don't read 40 pages of "Which Pokemon is bestest?".

Why make a thread about it? Why, why, why would you possibly give a shit what other people's favs are???

It gets me thinking back to another question I think about some times. What value to forums. I love forums, and spend a great deal of time browsing or posting. A few have greatmerits to them, wonderful discussions. The ubuntu forum is great. I've gotten tons of help off of it. There are a few others that are generally interesting, but there is still the trend such as this FPS board. Mounds and mounds of people not giving a shit about any real information, and just looking looking looking for their chance to get a word in. Yea, I'm putting my two sense in here... I guess I am an attention whore just like every one else, right? Or maybe there are some who actually care about real information... and its not even about that, its just about discussion. Talking about things that interest you. Degrassi.... for example... or anime, or making chicken soup, or what ever the fuck you like to do, its just about discussing it... As far as I can tell tho, this FPS type board are more common now. Its discouraging. Will my beloved forums all one day be like this???

Maybe I'm over thinking the whole thing. Maybe people really do give a damn about what other people's favourite fps is... I just don't get it...
