If I was dead set against becoming pregnant, I'd double up. Personally, I'd lean towards suggesting birth control pills to your wife (I know some people have had negative experiences with pills, but there are a TON of diferent ones.... so if one is being bothersome, she can always switch to something different)... and then I'd do condoms on top of that.
