Re: Racism:Do you beleive it's still present in our society? Of course racism exists; it's part of human nature.
My point of view affects how I see you.
My mother washed my mouth out with soap for using the n-word when I was 8 years old in Chesapeake, VA (1967). In 8th grade we had "race" riots at my school; Steve Creekmore and I went to the principle's office because the cops thought we were about to fight when we were about to share math class notes (1974). In '84 I got a Article 15 for calling a fellow soldier the n-word, I was pleased to shine his boots for a week because I was ashamed that I used that word. We became great friends and stayed in touch until '99 when he was killed in a car wreck.
Today I installed two ceiling fans with addon remote controls in the home of Jaimes and Kim M. I felt fine in their home but I suspect she didn't quite trust me.
I failed by not asking her why she didn't feel comfortable.
I think honest, open discussion is crucial along with realizing that bias/racism/prejudice is a part of my nature.
By knowing others that are not like me I get to know myself better and see fewer differences.
We are all the same but we are also all different.
Let us focus on what we have in common.
