Re: Fishing..... I can't help you with where to fish - but I can offer to tell you how to fish without bait and maybe catch a few more fish. First off find a decent outdoors shop with a good fishing section - what you're looking for is a special kind of bobber. Its clear - somewhat cigar shaped - and going thru the center of the bobber from end-to-end is a piece of flexible rubber tubing. In fact its actually a two piece affair with the rubber tubing holding the two halves together.
The key here is that when you're ready to fish you actually pull the bobber slightly apart and fill 1/3 to 1/2 with water - the weight of the water allows you to cast it with a regular casting rod.
And the whole point of this is that your son can now fish with "flys" just like the big boys do both floating flies and sinking flies --- no more bait.
So how does this work ? Cut the end of the fishing line so there is no hook or weights attached - just the line. Take the bobber out of the package and thread the line thu the bobber (doesn't matter which way) and leave about 2 - 3 ft of line past the bobber. Now take the bobber and gently twist each end the opposite direction -- the rubber tube will twist thus locking its position on the line. Tie on a fly - add the water to the bobber and cast away.
Any decent fishing shop should be able to help you out with all this and suggest a few flies to get going. And give you some tips on where to go fishing.
The flies should be smaller in length than the distance from your pinkie tip to the first knuckle - bigger is not better
Try some:
size 10 or 12 caddis flies - dry flies
size 10 grasshopper or crickets - dry flies
With dry flies just cast them and let them sit on the water and wait for 5 - 10 minutes --- then cast somewhere else --- repeat
size 10 whooly bugger (black) - wet fly
Wet flies sink and need some action - cast count to 5 then slowly twitch and reel the fly in --- think like a bug slowly swimming in the water
Good luck - I have many happy memories of fishing as a kid |
