Default Fit-to-Content

I've been wondering for quite sometime-- is fit-to-content versus maximize possible on Linux (or even in addition to)? I use two monitors on my desktop but really would like to go back to using one much larger monitor. The issue is that I can't see doing this without an easy, "Fit-to-content" ability like that on OSX. Who needs Firefox to be open across a 23" + monitor? I want to be able to see the 6 or 7 things (well maybe not quite as many) that I could with two monitors all at once, easily, without resizing everything all the time. It seems that no one has written up anything to do this for Linux or Windows (in a couple of quick search engine queries). Is there a reason that in our world of Mac OSX themes and imitators that no one hsa thought to port this useful feature to another platform?
