I was lucky to have had the opportunity to live in many different countries and my feeling is that racism is present in every society . However in Western societies there is some kind of effort to fight it. I don't know how succesful it is , maybe it is driving a lot of it underground. I think the Western effort to fight racism took a turn for the worse when the Politiaclly Correct movement got big. People wasted lots of energy of trying to change speech paterns from ' black' to 'African American' ,thinking that they have solved the problem that way. |
I've never had the impression most folks think or have thought changing some words would solve the problem. It seems to me that these are simply small steps toward a less bigoted culture. As you said, at least we are attempting to do something. We have fumbled the ball quite a bit but, that's no reason to give up and revert back to the past. Not that your saying that... peace
