Default chapter 36

excerpt from a story I'm afraid to say I've let languish.

A light drizzle fell from autumn gray skies into the small clearing, gathering on the orange leaves to drip on the ones below. Rain darkened stones set in a circle of shoulder high sentinels, occupied the centre of the open space. The air was heavy with the earthy smell of decaying leaves, in the forest of ancient Oaks.
The breaths of those who'd arrived there misted in the air, their damp woollen cloaks gathered about them. Branduff examined the stones, while Cian's men stood guard. All were wary, lis*tening for the sounds of approach.
"Soon thy must leave," Cian said holding Laura close to him.
"If only we could be together for a little longer," Laura replied wistfully.
"Then stay, do not torment our hearts." Laura did not respond, she held her arms around his chest, enjoying the warmth of him. Weaving the beating rhythm of his heart into the tapestry of her memory.
"Thy will go," he said forlornly.
"Yes, this is not my world. If you were able, would you come with me?" Laura turned away leaving his embrace. Her head falling downcast, knowing the answer. "My world is not yours, I could see it in your eyes."
Cian placed his hand on her shoulder, "Faery woman," he whispered tenderly. "Thy sees deep into my heart and sees what I do not. Dost thy see our days before us?"
"I can only see how our hearts will guide us."
"Do they not lead our love to each other?"
"As a bird soars."
"It must need come to earth," Cian lamented.
She remained silent, Cian pulled back the hood of her cloak. The light rain falling on her red hair became strands of silver pearls. "I will miss the visions in thy words and thy songs. The ache in my breast will be long in healing," he said sadly.
She turned back to him, tears were welling in the corners of her eyes, "The ache in mine will be as long." She reached up and pulled Cian's head to hers and with her lips she caressed his.
"In the place between worlds when we were brought together. Your wounds were so great, like a horror in my dreams, I was unable to move. From somewhere I found the strength and the courage to tend them. Your spirit though was gone and took a long time in healing. Yet in the cure we bared our souls and nurtured a love. There were many happy days in the place between worlds. We played as children on
the fields in the warm sun."
"Embraced under a tree when it rained," Cian smiled.
"Shared the warmth of the hearth on cold nights," Laura smiled, "the warmth of our love."
"Laura, stay, we could live those days anew."
"I am not of your world, there is no place for me here. The Christians call me witch and your own people fear me as a Danaan priestess. Your alliance with Nial is threatened, his son Leagh whispers in his ear the words of the bishop Patrick. Using his fear of me against you."
"Cian, Laura, we are ready," Branduff interrupted. Laura turned and saw the old man stood at a distance respectful of their privacy.
"A moment longer," she implored.
Branduff smiled gently and nodded. Turning he moved into the circle of stones intoning incantations to the four compass points. Turning his face up towards the heavens, the wind began to swirl within the centre of the circle. The whirl wind grew defined by the fallen leaves and debris it picked up from the forest floor.
"I love thee," Cian held Laura closer, his voice growing hoarse and tears fell.
"I love thee," Laura replied she slipped out of his embrace and ran into the circle of stones. Into the swirling wind.
"The old ways are gone!" Cian yelled after her
as she vanished from his sight.
