I also think humans will wipe themselves out, but rather by something stupid than evil and destructive. Think Golgafrinchians and their demise by ridding their planet of phone sanitizers and then contracting a fatal disease.
I think it'll take more than a thousand years though. More like 1500.

I think they will say something like this:
"They had more technology at the time than they knew what to do with. They then concentrated on entertainment technology. A few believed that the entire world were just as entitled to the use of these primitive 'personal computers' as those with toy gadgets. Some of these few became known as 'The Ubuntu.'"
