I have a few options. I could throw it in the empty lot across the street, which is what most people here say I should do. Instead, I carry it down the street and around the corner to a community trash receptacle (one small bucket, 1.2 m tall, 60 cm x 60 cm square, for an area housing about 400 families!!).

Before moving here from the USA, I had curbside recycling, so this situation has struck me as quite odd.
